Modern Luxury In Traditional George Town At The G Hotel Kelawai

Penang is quickly becoming known as one of the top travel destinations for 2017, in large part due to its history and culture. Identified as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2008, Georgetown in particular is filled with old world charm. However, Penang has fully embraced modernity as well, being labeled the “Silicon Valley of the East.” In this review I share why the G Hotel Kelawai perfectly captures the modernity now being found in Penang!

G Hotel Kelawai

When you first pull up to the G Hotel Kelawai, you will be immediately impressed by the tall modern building covered in neon lights. This modern exterior gives a small preview of the unique and innovative facilities inside of the hotel. The lobby looks like it was taken straight from a modern art museum, with long flowing exposed wood that reminded me of the inside of a piano!

The Rooms At G Hotel Kelawai

The G Hotel boasts 4 room categories, including the Deluxe, Executive, Premier Executive, and Premier Suite categories. All of the rooms have a very modern and clean design, with tall floor to ceiling windows, beautifully furnished bathrooms, and a 55 inch HDTV, according to my boyfriend that’s pretty important! I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of going from the older heritage sites in Georgetown straight into my very modern and comfortable room.

I was lucky enough to be upgraded to the Premier Executive room, which is definitely worth the extra cost. The room size increases to an impressive 45 square meters, including its own leather couch, and a massive marble bathtub with a window overlooking the city. However, my favourite part of the Premier Executive room was that it included access to the G Hotel’s Club Floor and Executive Lounge!

The Executive Lounge At G Hotel

The Club Floor, situated at the top of the G Hotel, provides many inclusions beyond the great view (which is worth it alone!). These amenities include a personalised check-in and check-out, ice-cream upon arrival (and I do love ice cream), and many complimentary services particularly useful for working on the road, great wifi, local calls, and DVD player.

Daily breakfast is also available in the lounge, served buffet style from 6:30 am to 11:00 am, which was great to avoid the crowds downstairs. Finally, be sure to take full advantage of the nightly cocktails, where complimentary wine, cheese, and other foods are available each night from 6-8 PM. The Club Floor provides the ultimate experience to make you feel like a VIP during your stay!

The Amenities At G Hotel

The top class amenities at the G Hotel Kelawai extend far beyond the Club Floor. There is a gorgeous rooftop infinity pool, complete with numerous sun loungers so you never have to fight for a spot. Plus the view of Penang here is probably second only to be at the top of Penang Hill! The hotel also caters well to business travellers, with a full featured Business Center to check your email or make that important phone call.

After business is taken care of you can workout in the hotel’s state of the art gym, complete with all kinds of machines, free weights, and cardio equipment. If you prefer to get your exercise while exploring the city, the G hotel has you covered with complimentary “G Cycles”. It was great to grab these bikes to go sightseeing at my own pace, and is definitely an appreciated feature!

Dining At The G Hotel

The G Hotel has 3 dining options on-site, each with a different vibe. There’s the Spoon Café, a great all day dining spot serving a variety fresh foods from around the world. The 2PM Lounge is an al fresco dining option, perfect for afternoon tea if you are on a girls getaway!

Finally, my personal favourite is the rooftop bar aptly named Gravity, which offers the perfect place for a sunset cocktail with an amazing view of the city. The dining at the G Hotel has a dining environment for every occasion and you certainly won’t need to explore Penang on an empty stomach!

The Location

When you do decide to venture out from the hotel, you’ll quickly see how perfectly located the hotel is. Located directly on the famous Jalan Kelawai Street, the hotel is a short walk to numerous sites including local temples and food options. Gurney Plaza and Gurney Paragon are also minutes away, perfect for your shopping needs. Simply wandering around George Town and discovering all of its hidden secrets is part of the fun, and the hotel is ideally located for your adventures. As previously mentioned, make sure to take advantage of the hotel’s complimentary “G Cycle” bikes to explore!

It goes without saying that I can highly recommend the G Hotel Kelawai for your next stay in Penang. It was wonderful experiencing the traditional side of George Town and returning each night to a very modernised and comfortable hotel room. Between the friendly service, excellent amenities, and exquisite rooms, you’ll find yourself wanting to return to the G Hotel as soon as possible!
