Mendoza, in Northern Argentina is perhaps best known for its incredible wineries and many visitors head there to sample wines from many of the local vineyards. Whilst the wine tasting experience cannot be missed in Mendoza, there are other activities to be found in the area. My absolute favourite being white water rafting from the town of Potrerillos, a short drive from central Mendoza. The Mendoza river that you will raft on is also that which irrigates the Maipu and Lujan de Cuyo wine regions.
We booked our tour with Argentina Rafting, who arrange the pick up from your hotel. The drive takes around an hour to reach the point in the river that you will begin your adventure on the river. But that hour will go quickly as you meander up towards the mountains and are surrounded with spectacular views all the way.
Your base for the day is Potrerillo’s, where there is a restaurant complete with a sun deck providing beautiful river river views that can be enjoyed after your activity is complete. (There are also a few pet cats and a friendly dog to entertain you during lunch!)
You will switch from your everyday clothes into a wetsuit, life vest and ultra stylish helmet (ladies – don’t bother doing your hair beforehand) and then head out onto the river where you will travel approximately 8 miles (13km) with your guide. The rapids on Mendoza River are intermediate level (Class 2), and can rise up to Class 3/4 in the summer months so its a perfect rafting destination if you are new to the sport.
And if after your white water rafting is done, you have not had a big enough dose of adrenaline for the day you can also zipline from one side of the river to the other! At the end of the day you can relax at the restaurant take in the views and wait for your photos from your day on the river to be ready!
